In last month’s (August 2020) post, I told the story of two digital entrepreneurs. I contrasted why one is successful and the other isn’t.
Let’s take a deeper look at one creator who took a different path. Entrepreneurs, the ones that are struggling usually do the same things, think the same way, and run their business the same way as everyone else.
But, with different insights and information, aspiring entrepreneurs can create a viable business.
What follows is a true story about someone I know well.
She was, like so many of us, unhappy working at a corporate job. She wanted to create a personal venture that was small, yet powerful and profitable. Successful enough to give her the freedom she sought, while staying in control.
Background
Years back, she had selected her college major simply because there were lots of options available. Her main goal was to get a secure job with good pay. And she did find a position at a mid-size company just after graduation.
At first, everything was new, she was excited, and could afford a nice place of her own. But, soon she found she was bored. She stuck with her job because she needed the money to continue the life she had established.
But every day she resented the work and felt trapped. She dreamed of creating something she owned, enjoyed, and provided her an income. She described her current job as “a pebble in my shoe”, irritating but she kept putting up with it.
Until one day, things were a little more unbearable. She was a little out of sorts. Her boss was more demanding and the work uninspiring. She vowed that she would finally take the right action.
The Beginning
It’s not that she wasn’t trying to help herself.
Previously, she had run with an idea that was not aligned with her passion. She thought it was a winning idea, but her heart wasn’t in it. After a brief attempt, she dropped it. Now after a lot of soul-searching and analysis, she had a new idea. One that fit her interests and her audience would enjoy, She worked on refining her idea and her marketing until she found just the right niche of people who would love what she was offering.
Obstacles
Still, she was battling obstacles. She couldn’t leave her job until this idea was proven to work and has an audience that would support her. She knew she couldn’t just throw a website and have a lot of traffic and raving fans.
She was looking for answers and information, took courses and webinars that gave her a lot of tactics. She searched for all the famous internet marketers and listened to what they said. They convinced her that their product would make the difference and was exactly what she needed. Their technique would open up doors to attract clients and sell her services.
She tried them all but didn’t get any true results. The truth was she was confused with all the information.
A New Point of View
One day she happened upon someone with a different approach. It was not simply “do this one tweak and your business will take off”. She learned that a successful entrepreneur is strategic and develops a system. They don’t try to be a generalist or be all things to all people.
Instead, they find a group of people whose needs fall outside the mainstream and are ignored. This becomes their niche.
They don’t jump from one tactic to another. They work to attract those clients who want what they have, will like and trust them and become loyal fans. They identify obstacles that are holding them back and develop solutions.
At first, she was doubtful. Having watched so many webinars saying the same things, without results, she didn’t want more of the same.
But, intrigued about this new concept, she read every word on the website and every email. She slowly realized she was looking at something different and unique.
Transformation
This was a game-changer for her. She reshaped her business. She started taking action.
It changed her thinking and her focus. She now defines her people differently, what she offers them, and how she markets. No longer, is she forcing a way to get attention, but people are attracted to her offer. With this new path in place, she has started to see success.
I know this is the right way to design a small but lucrative venture because this person is me. I have changed my business and how I think. And while I haven’t met all my goals yet, I see the potential and how much better it’s working.
